Lock Haven Blanks Chestnut Hill, 2-0, in Season Opener

LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa.  — Patricio Zapata struck in the closing minutes of the first half and Kade Black added a second-half insurance goal as Lock Haven opened its season with a convincing 2-0 victory over host Chestnut Hill on Thursday night at Victory Field.

Goalkeeper Ethan Beck was rarely tested but made the most of his opportunities, turning away all two shots he faced to earn the shutout in what was a dominant performance from start to finish for the visiting Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven controlled possession and created chances throughout the contest, outshooting Chestnut Hill 16-7 and putting eight shots on goal to the Griffins' two. Chestnut Hill goalkeeper Rodrigo Artiga was kept busy all night, making six saves — four in the first half alone — to keep his team within striking distance before the final whistle slipped away.

The match's decisive moment came at the 42:30 mark of the first half, when Zapata finished off an assist from Danny Ogan to put Lock Haven on top. The goal capped a frenzied stretch of play in which the Bald Eagles had pressed relentlessly, generating five corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. The sequence was punctuated by a missed penalty kick at the 36-minute mark — Carter Rosno's attempt was stopped by Artiga — but Lock Haven refused to be denied. Just minutes after the substitution that brought Zapata on for the penalized Rosno, the freshman delivered, converting Ogan's service for his first career goal.

Chestnut Hill spent much of that first half digging out of disciplinary trouble. Dane Bodziak picked up a yellow card at 27:51, followed just minutes later by Aiden Norton at 33:44, leaving the Griffins shorthanded in terms of defensive composure during Lock Haven's most dangerous stretches.

The second half told a similar story. Lock Haven came out of the break looking to put the match away, and it took just over eight minutes to do so. Ogan, the evening's most productive player, recorded his second assist of the night, setting up Black in the 53rd minute for a goal that all but sealed the result. Ogan finished with two assists and four shots, establishing himself as the offensive engine for the Bald Eagles.

Chestnut Hill mounted a late push, putting four shots on frame in the second half, but none were able to beat Beck, who was composure personified between the posts. The Griffins were also issued a third yellow card on the night, with Ermir Hoti cautioned at the 54:59 mark — just 84 seconds after Lock Haven's second goal.

Lock Haven's defense, anchored by a disciplined backline, allowed the Griffins only four corners the entire match and surrendered virtually nothing in dangerous areas.

The Bald Eagles improve to 1-0-0 on the young season, while Chestnut Hill falls to 0-1-0. Both teams will look to regroup as conference play approaches in the coming weeks.
