Lock Haven Downs Shippensburg 2-0 Behind Hudson's Early Strike, Shaffer's Insurance Goal

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — Olivia Hudson converted early and Maci Shaffer added a second-half insurance goal as Lock Haven knocked off host Shippensburg 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at David See Field, handing the Raiders their ninth loss of the season.

The victory moves Lock Haven to 4-8-2 overall and 3-8-2 in league play, while Shippensburg drops to 3-8-3 on the year.

From the opening minutes, it was clear Lock Haven came with a game plan, and they executed it at the critical moments. The Bald Eagles struck first at the 15:41 mark of the first half when Hudson — a midfielder — finished off a well-constructed sequence. Julia Tavares and Sydney Linus each recorded assists on the play, with Tavares and Linus combining to set up Hudson's third goal of the season. The early lead gave Lock Haven exactly the cushion they needed heading into the half.

Shippensburg responded by pressing in the closing moments of the first half, earning four corner kicks in the final 25 minutes of the period and managing a pair of shots on goal. But Lock Haven goalkeeper Megan Miller was equal to the task, making one save in the first half as the Bald Eagles carried the 1-0 lead into the break.

The second half told a similar story — Shippensburg committed to pushing forward, but Lock Haven's defensive structure held firm and capitalized on the counter. At the 59:13 mark, Shaffer put the game away with an unassisted goal, her first of the season, giving the Bald Eagles a two-goal cushion. It proved to be the decisive blow.

Raiders tried to respond, but Shippensburg's offensive chances came too little too late. Goalkeeper Kirstin Brown worked hard in net for the home side, finishing with four saves on 11 shots faced. The Raiders generated their most consistent pressure in the final 15 minutes of regulation, as Quinn Maegan, Mia Kemp, and Gracie Boritz each put shots on frame, but Miller answered each time.

Miller, who went the full 90 minutes between the posts, turned in a composed performance, recording three saves and posting the shutout — her first of the season by the data. She faced eight shots total and never appeared in serious danger of conceding.

Shaffer was Lock Haven's most dangerous attacking presence on the day, totaling three shots and two on goal to go along with her goal. Hudson also made her mark with two shots, one on frame, and of course, the opening strike that set the tone.

Shippensburg's foul trouble was a persistent issue, particularly in the second half, where the Raiders committed seven of their nine total fouls. Maegan Quinn accounted for three fouls on her own — a costly pattern that disrupted the home team's rhythm and ceded valuable set-piece opportunities to the visitors.

Lock Haven out-shot Shippensburg 11-8, held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal, and earned corners at a 2-5 clip in their favor on the day.
