Lock Haven Rallies With Three Third-Period Goals to Down Mercyhurst, 4-2

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — Kelsey Felix scored a penalty stroke, set up another goal and made three saves in net to help Lock Haven erase a first-period deficit with a dominant third-period surge, as the Bald Eagles defeated Mercyhurst 4-2 in a non-conference field hockey match Sunday afternoon at Charlotte Smith Field.

The victory improved Lock Haven to 2-16 on the season, while Mercyhurst dropped to 2-15.

Mercyhurst drew first blood at the 13:42 mark of the opening period when sophomore forward Ava Jones — playing in her first career start — redirected a pass from freshman midfielder Anna Muscat high over the goalkeeper and into the cage for her third goal of the season. The Lakers carried that 1-0 lead into halftime behind a handful of penalty corner opportunities, while Lock Haven goalkeeper Felix turned away a Jen Kemp shot in the second period to preserve the deadlock through 30 minutes of play.

The game turned decisively in the third period, where Lock Haven exploded for three goals in just over three minutes to seize full control.

Felix herself provided the spark at 38:17, converting a penalty stroke to level the contest at 1-1. Just 45 seconds later, midfielder Molly Lynch finished off a well-executed set piece, burying a goal off a double-pass sequence from a penalty corner with assists credited to Haley Kvacky and Paula Sigley. The sequence capped a relentless wave of pressure generated by the Bald Eagles — Madison Friend alone was credited with six penalty corner injections on the day — and the momentum proved impossible to stop.

Madison Friend then put Lock Haven ahead 3-1 at 41:44, finishing a cutting run down the right side off a Brynlee Pinschenat assist for her second goal of the season. The three-goal third-period outburst in a span of roughly three and a half minutes effectively broke Mercyhurst's spirit and its defensive structure.

Melanie Beall extended the lead to 4-1 just 1:42 into the fourth quarter, collecting a Kendall Siegle assist and slipping a shot under the goalkeeper for her third goal of the year. With backup goalkeeper Rhyden Wheldon inserted in net for Mercyhurst at 51:35, the Lakers showed some fight late. Senior Marina Evert capped the scoring at 55:59 with her fifth goal of the season, ripping a counterattack finish past Felix for the final margin of 4-2.

Evert's finish gave the senior class something to hold onto on a difficult afternoon, as the Lakers were outshot 21-7 for the game and could not replicate the third-period surge that undid them.

Felix was brilliant despite the unconventional storyline of a goalkeeper scoring, stopping 3 of 5 on-target shots while also netting the crucial penalty stroke that gave Lock Haven the momentum swing it needed.

Lock Haven dominated possession, generated 18 penalty corners to Mercyhurst's 12 and controlled the decisive stretches when the game was there to be won.
