Glenville State Sweeps Lock Haven in Doubleheader, 9-4 and 4-3

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Glenville State completed a home doubleheader sweep of Lock Haven on Friday afternoon, winning the opener 9-4 before holding on for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. The Pioneers improved to 5-1 on the young season, while the Bald Eagles fell to 0-2 after a day marred by defensive miscues and missed opportunities with runners in scoring position.

Game 1: Glenville State 9, Lock Haven 4

Errors proved to be Lock Haven's undoing in the opener, as the Bald Eagles committed six miscues that handed Glenville State the majority of its runs in a 9-4 defeat that was never as close as the final score suggests.

Lock Haven starter Tyler Serb gave the Pioneers fits early, surrendering an unearned run in the first inning when Greyson McNeill doubled to right-center to score Adam Bright, who had reached on an error. Serb settled momentarily before the wheels came off in the fourth and fifth innings, when Glenville State erupted for eight combined runs — only one of which was earned against Serb.

The fourth inning was emblematic of Lock Haven's afternoon. After Colby Guy walked and Luke Sweigar was hit by a pitch, Gavin Blair singled to load the bases. A catcher's error by Tom Rohan allowed one run to score, and the carnage continued as Jetsel Cajigas-Marti grounded out to drive in Blair, then two more runners scored on a wild pitch and a subsequent throwing error. Glenville State sent nine men to the plate in the fifth inning alone, with Blair and Jacob Meadows doing the most damage. Meadows singled and raced to third on a throwing error by Rohan, driving in two more runs to push the lead to 9-3.

Grant Landis earned the win for Glenville State, pitching five strong innings and allowing just two earned runs on two hits. The senior right-hander walked two and struck out none, relying on his defense — when it was sound — and benefiting enormously from Lock Haven's generosity.

Offensively, Blair went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Pioneers, while Meadows finished with a hit and two RBI. For Lock Haven, Robert Furino was the bright spot with a 2-for-3 performance including a double, but the Bald Eagles stranded nine runners and went 0-for-4 with pinch-hitter Jaxson Pupo — all fly outs. Lock Haven scratched across a run in the sixth on an error and added another in the seventh on a walk by Jackson Bower with the bases loaded, but it was too little, too late.

Game 2: Glenville State 4, Lock Haven 3

The nightcap was a tighter affair, and Lock Haven appeared poised to steal a victory before Glenville State's offense delivered the decisive blows in the middle innings.

Brady Myers took the loss for Lock Haven, going the distance and striking out eight, but surrendering four earned runs on five hits. Myers showed flashes of dominance — he fanned eight Pioneers in six innings — but a pair of home runs proved his undoing.

Lock Haven actually led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, having scored single runs in the first, third, and fourth innings. Braden Cummings was the offensive catalyst for the Bald Eagles, going 4-for-4 with a double. Nick Negola provided the biggest hit of the game for Lock Haven with a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning that gave his team a one-run edge.

But Glenville State answered. Adam Bright singled to right field to score Austin Carter in the fifth, knotting the game at three. Then, in the sixth, Luke Sweigar launched a solo home run to right-center off Myers to put the Pioneers ahead for good. Anthony Ruiz, who entered in relief of William Chu to begin the sixth, retired all six batters he faced and struck out three to earn the win.

Chu worked five innings for Glenville State, allowing three runs — two earned — and departing with a 3-3 tie.
